Cloverleaf SmartStart Replacement UV Bulbs
Keep a compatible Cloverleaf SmartStart ultraviolet clarifier on its correct maintenance schedule with a genuine replacement lamp. Choose a single 24W or 36W SmartStart bulb to match the lamp specified for your particular unit. These are specialist replacement components, not complete clarifiers, and the selected wattage refers to one lamp rather than the total output of a multi-lamp system.
The SmartStart design incorporates the starter ballast in the lamp assembly. That makes it different from an ordinary replacement UV tube of the same wattage. Check the old lamp label, the clarifier model and its instructions before ordering. A bulb advertised simply as 24W or 36W is not automatically a substitute, and an aquarium lighting lamp is not a pond UV-C replacement.
Choose the correct wattage and quantity
| Option | Quantity supplied | Selection check |
|---|---|---|
| 24W SmartStart | One lamp assembly | Unit specifies a Cloverleaf 24W SmartStart lamp |
| 36W SmartStart | One lamp assembly | Unit specifies a Cloverleaf 36W SmartStart lamp |
Some Cloverleaf systems use more than one lamp. For example, a system described by its combined wattage may require two individual bulbs rather than one bulb carrying that total number. Check the number and rating of the installed lamps, and order the quantity needed. Do not increase the lamp wattage or change a mixed-lamp arrangement unless the instructions for that exact clarifier explicitly allow it.
These replacements are for compatible Cloverleaf SmartStart equipment. Different Cloverleaf generations, and units from other manufacturers, can use different electrical connections and quartz arrangements. Matching a brand name alone is not a sufficient check. Compare the complete model designation and replacement part specification, especially if the original unit was bought second-hand or has previously been modified.
The lamp and quartz sleeve do different jobs
The lamp produces UV-C light inside the clarifier. The surrounding quartz sleeve separates the lamp from the water passing through the chamber. A damaged sleeve is therefore a different fault from an ageing bulb. Replacing the bulb does not repair cracked quartz or renew every seal in the unit.
For the corresponding older twin-lamp sleeve size, see our Cloverleaf SmartStart 48W and 72W replacement quartz sleeve. Check the stated sleeve compatibility independently: this is not a universal sleeve for every unit that uses a 24W or 36W lamp. Other brands have their own parts within our UV spare parts range.
Plan replacement as part of filter servicing
Cloverleaf’s SmartStart maintenance instructions call for annual bulb replacement. Keep a note of when the lamp was fitted, so maintenance is based on its service history rather than waiting until it stops glowing. Visible illumination does not, by itself, establish that a lamp is still providing its intended useful UV output.
Before fitting a replacement, make space to work and identify the isolation points for the equipment. Read the instructions supplied with your own clarifier because the access method varies between models. Check that the replacement remains protected from knocks while you arrange the tools and work area. Glass components should never be laid where they can roll off a bench or be stepped on.
Handle the assembly carefully
Disconnect the unit from its electrical supply before opening it. Never look directly at an operating UV lamp, and never energise a replacement outside the assembled protective housing. Do not use a live test of an exposed bulb to check whether it works. Follow the manufacturer’s handling and fitting sequence throughout the job.
When access is available, support the lamp as directed and keep it aligned during removal and refitting. Avoid forcing a connector or twisting fragile glass to overcome resistance. If a part will not seat normally, stop and check its orientation, condition and compatibility. A replacement that looks similar should not be made to fit by altering the electrical connections.
Checks before returning the clarifier to service
Inspect the surrounding quartz and seals while the unit is isolated. If you disturb a water seal, follow the clarifier’s instructions for reassembly and a leak check before restoring power. Keep electrical connections dry. Return covers and guards to their correct positions and confirm that water is flowing through the unit before operating the lamp.
After servicing, monitor the equipment for leaks and check that the pump and filter are operating as expected. If green water remains a problem, consider the full system: actual flow, pond volume, sunlight, stocking, mechanical filtration and quartz cleanliness all matter. A new bulb cannot compensate for an unsuitable clarifier size or a blocked filter.
What you receive
Your selected option supplies one genuine Cloverleaf SmartStart replacement bulb assembly. The clarifier body, quartz sleeve, seals and other service parts are not included. Keep the original model details and your replacement date with the pond’s maintenance records so the next service and spare-part order are straightforward.
