Burtons In-Wall Pond Skimmer with Lid
A high-flow built-in surface skimmer for koi ponds and formal pond walls
The Burtons In-Wall Pond Skimmer is designed to be built into a blockwork pond wall, where it continuously draws floating leaves, dust, pollen and food debris from the surface before that waste sinks. Its stainless-steel front plate gives the pond-facing opening a clean finish, while the removable lid provides access to the internal collection area.
With a recommended flow window from 8,000 to 20,000 litres per hour and coverage quoted up to 40m² of pond surface, this is a serious skimmer for larger koi ponds and formal installations. It sits over a standard concrete block, which makes it easier to incorporate into new wall construction.
Our practical advice: plan a skimmer before the wall is built. The finished water line, pump or gravity flow, waterproofing detail and access above the lid all need to agree; moving it later is far harder than adjusting it on paper.

Flow and system design
A skimmer only works when water moves across the surface towards it. Return jets, waterfalls and prevailing wind can all help or hinder that movement. The pump and pipework must deliver a real installed flow within the specified range after friction and lift are allowed for.
The 110mm outlet makes the skimmer well suited to gravity-fed layouts, but the exact connection to the filter or pump depends on the complete system. Include isolation and safe access so the line can be inspected without draining the pond.
Build-in and waterproofing details
Set the mouth at the intended operating water level, not simply at the top of the blockwork. Allow for drawdown when pumps are running and for the level band created by an automatic top-up. The liner, fibreglass or rendered waterproofing must be sealed to the front assembly using the correct installation method.
Keep the lid accessible after paving or coping is fitted. A beautiful hidden installation is no help if the basket or chamber cannot be reached during autumn leaf fall.
Frequently asked questions
Is the lid included?
Yes. The Burtons in-wall skimmer is supplied with its access lid.
What flow does it need?
Burtons specifies a working range of 8,000 to 20,000 litres per hour.
Can it handle a 40m² pond?
Burtons quotes surface coverage up to 40m², but pond shape, wind, returns and debris load can reduce practical coverage.
Does it use 110mm pipe?
Yes. The outlet is a 110mm connection.
Can it be added to an existing pond?
It can, but cutting into a finished wall and remaking the waterproofing is specialist work. It is easiest to install during the original build.
Where should the returns be positioned?
Arrange them to encourage a slow surface movement towards the skimmer without trapping floating debris in a corner.
Will it replace a bottom drain?
No. A surface skimmer and bottom drain collect waste from different parts of the pond and often work best together.
