Blagdon Stress Away 250ml pond fish treatment

Blagdon Stress Away is a pond fish treatment intended to support fish during stressful periods, including the introduction of new fish and changing conditions in spring and autumn. This is the 250ml bottle, manufacturer part 2754, supplied individually. It is the smaller bottle in the same range as our Blagdon Stress Away 1000ml.

Blagdon describes Stress Away as a preventative treatment. Its place is within a considered pond-care routine, alongside water testing, suitable filtration and attention to the cause of stress. It should not be used to disguise a water-quality problem or as a substitute for identifying why a fish is unwell. Read the current bottle instructions before every course.

When might you choose Stress Away?

Introducing fish changes the pond community and involves transport and handling. Seasonal temperature changes also affect the pond and its inhabitants. Blagdon lists these situations among the intended uses for Stress Away, together with periods of poor water quality. The manufacturer describes monthly preventative use; follow the current label for the complete dosing schedule and any conditions that apply to your pond.

Before adding a treatment, consider what has changed. Recent cleaning, additional fish, uneaten food, a stopped pump or a change in water supply can all be relevant observations. Record the date, water temperature and test results so that you can judge changes over time. The aim is to address the problem as well as support the fish.

Test the pond before treatment

Clear water does not tell you everything about its chemistry. Use an appropriate pond test kit and follow its sampling instructions, reaction times and colour chart. Our Blagdon Complete Pond Dip Test Kit is one option to compare; the NT Labs Pond Lab Multi-Test Kit offers a different testing format. Check which parameters each kit measures before buying.

If a reading is outside the suitable range, investigate its cause and take appropriate corrective action. Simply adding more treatment will not repair a failed filter or restore circulation from a stopped pump. Keep a written record of products already used, including their dates and quantities, before considering another treatment.

Check the pond volume and bottle directions

The manufacturer’s 250ml bottle photograph states three treatments for a 2,273-litre pond. That is a course-coverage figure, not 2,273 litres for every millilitre or a direction to empty the bottle in one dose. Use the current bottle instructions to measure each application and check the timing between doses. The larger 1000ml bottle has a different total coverage.

Dose against the actual water volume, allowing for the shape and depth of the pond rather than relying only on its outside dimensions. An irregular pond with shelves may hold substantially less water than a rectangular calculation suggests. Use a reliable recorded fill volume where you have one, and recheck your units when converting between litres and gallons.

Shake the bottle well before use, as directed by Blagdon. Measure the required quantity carefully with suitable dedicated equipment and follow the instructions supplied with the bottle for timing and repeat doses. This listing identifies the bottle size and intended use; the current label remains the reference for the precise dose. Do not increase a dose because the fish have not immediately changed their behaviour.

Compatibility with other pond treatments

Blagdon says not to use Stress Away with other fish medications. This distinction matters: a water conditioner and a fish medication perform different jobs. Check the label of every product already in use, and do not assume that two bottles from the same brand can automatically be combined.

The manufacturer states that Stress Away can be used alongside its pond water-treatment range. For example, Blagdon Fresh Start is a separate tap-water conditioner. Stress Away does not replace the preparation required when adding fresh tap water. Follow both products’ instructions and avoid adding unrelated treatments without checking compatibility.

Observe the fish and the equipment

Continue checking the fish during a treatment course. Note changes in swimming, feeding, breathing and appearance rather than judging progress from the water alone. If fish remain unwell or their condition deteriorates, seek help with diagnosis instead of repeatedly adding preventative products. A targeted response depends on understanding the underlying problem.

Also check that the pond equipment is operating as intended. Keep access to the pump, filter and aeration system clear so that routine inspections remain easy. Follow the treatment label and equipment instructions for any specific operating requirements during treatment; do not assume that directions from a different medication apply to this one.

Choosing a bottle and keeping it safely

The 250ml bottle is useful when you need a smaller pack and want to keep the exact product and part number clear. Compare the 1000ml bottle if your calculated course requires more. Choose the quantity from the labelled dose and your measured pond volume, rather than from the bottle’s physical size alone.

Keep the product in its original labelled container, securely closed and stored according to the pack directions. Retain the instructions and check any expiry information before use. Keep treatments and measuring equipment away from children and pets. Stress Away is for ornamental pond fish and must not be used on fish intended for human consumption.
