82 litres per minute at a defined working pressure
The AP-80H is rated to deliver 82 litres of air per minute at 200mbar, with a specified operating range of 100–300mbar. That pressure information is essential when comparing air pumps for submerged diffusers or a filter’s air requirement. Resistance comes from the complete circuit, including the diffuser and the connecting pipework. Use the Thomas performance curve to assess a different working point; the model number is not a guarantee of identical delivery in every installation.
The Thomas AP-40 is a smaller alternative with a different pressure range and a rating taken at 120mbar. For a larger combined demand, the Thomas LP-150HN is rated at the same 200mbar reference pressure as the AP-80H. Those distinctions allow a useful comparison without assigning an unsupported maximum pond size to any model.
Linear diaphragm design with two protective functions
The pump uses an oil-free linear diaphragm mechanism and an integrated intake filter. The manufacturer manual identifies both thermal protection and an integrated diaphragm-protection switch for the AP-80H. Thermal protection stops operation during overheating and allows operation again after cooling. The separate diaphragm-protection switch can stop the pump following diaphragm failure or an external impact. These are different functions and should not be described as a general maintenance-free guarantee.
A stopped pump therefore needs a proper diagnosis. Check the external supply and installation first, then use the manual’s servicing guidance. If diaphragm damage is suspected, Thomas directs the owner to trained service personnel. Repeatedly resetting a protection mechanism without addressing the cause is not a maintenance plan.
Size the main hose before splitting the airflow
The AP-80H has an 18mm outside-diameter outlet. Thomas specifies that the connecting hose’s internal diameter should be at least as large as the outlet’s external diameter, and that the hose length should not exceed 10m. The instruction also warns that kinks and bends affect performance. Check the main run and the distribution components together rather than adding narrow fittings that become the limiting part of the installation.
The manufacturer’s standard connection assembly, reference 700073, is an angled outlet hose with two clamps. It is not a multi-outlet manifold. Browse our air pump accessories for the separate distribution components your design needs, checking each connection size and flow requirement. Thomas specifies operation within the rated pressure range and prohibits zero-pressure operation; simply leaving the outlet open is not the intended working arrangement.
Positioning a compact but serviceable installation
The pump body measures 190 Ă— 172 Ă— 199mm and weighs 6.1kg. It shares the listed body dimensions of the AP-40, but differs in weight and performance. Include clearance for the hose, power lead and filter-cover access when planning a shelf or equipment area. The manufacturer requires a dry, ventilated room and a firm, non-slip base with the pump resting horizontally on its feet.
For pond use, install the pump above water level to prevent water returning into it. IP54 is the published protection class for this enclosed series, but does not permit immersion. Keep the pump free of contact with neighbouring objects. Thomas lists an average sound level of 35dB(A); installation vibration and the surrounding structure affect the sound experienced beside a particular pond.
Power requirement and daily energy comparison
The specified supply is 230V at 50Hz, and power consumption at rated pressure is 73W. Multiplying 73W by twenty-four hours gives approximately 1.75kWh per day at that constant draw. This derived figure helps compare equipment demand; it is not a test result or a fixed daily bill. Use your own electricity unit rate and allow for the actual operating conditions when estimating cost.
There is no separate on/off switch on the pump. The installation must leave its plug accessible for disconnection. Isolate it before maintenance and allow it to cool, especially after a thermal shutdown, as protection may reset when the temperature falls.
Filter care and AP-80H service references
The manufacturer’s schedule is an intake-filter clean every three months and replacement every twelve months. Inspect the element and its seating if output falls or the pump becomes unusually noisy. The datasheet lists maintenance rebuild kit 700579 for the AP-80H, air-filter and gasket kit 700582Y, and air-filter kit 700583Y. These model-specific references are useful when checking replacement parts; they do not mean a service kit is included in this listing.
Rebuild work is designated for trained service personnel. Keep the model and nameplate details with your maintenance record, particularly where an older Thomas or Yasunaga-branded pump is being replaced. The manufacturer documents below provide the relevant drawings, pressure curve and service information for making that comparison.
Manufacturer documents
Thomas 230V/50Hz specification and dimension drawings and the Thomas installation and maintenance manual provide the operating curves and servicing guidance. The table above uses the current product datasheet; read the model nameplate and supplied instructions before installation.
