Thermotec Mini 5kW reversible heat pump for small swimming pools

A small above-ground pool can lose a surprising amount of warmth overnight. The Thermotec Mini gives a suitably sized pool its own compact heating system, drawing heat from the outside air and transferring it into the circulating water. It is a practical option for summer swimming without stepping up to a much larger pool heat pump.

This is the 5kW reversible Mini, with heating, cooling and automatic modes, a titanium heat exchanger, a straightforward LED controller and local Bluetooth control through the Aqua Temp app. It connects to a compatible existing pool pump and filter; it does not replace them.

  • Compact cabinet: 420 × 350 × 380mm, before allowing the required ventilation and service space.
  • UK plug-and-play model: supplied with a UK plug and inline RCD, for a suitable protected outdoor electrical connection.
  • 32/38mm hose connections: useful for many small above-ground pool installations, subject to checking the actual hose fittings.
  • Simple temperature control: use the buttons on the unit or the Aqua Temp Bluetooth app when nearby.
  • 5kW heat output under warm test conditions: this is heating capacity, not a constant 5kW electrical demand.

Is the Thermotec Mini suitable for my pool?

The Mini is intended for appropriately sized, covered above-ground swimming pools. It is worth considering for a small Intex or Bestway pool, but the brand name alone does not establish compatibility: check the water volume, actual circulation flow, hose connections and the months when you want to swim.

Intended swimming season Supplier sizing guidance for the 5kW Mini
May to September Pools up to 10m³ / 10,000 litres
April to October Pools up to 5.5m³ / 5,500 litres

These are conditional guidelines, not guaranteed capacities. Heat Pumps 4 Pools bases them on a suitable solar cover being used as much as possible, with no more than four hours a day uncovered. An exposed location, colder weather, a higher target temperature or longer uncovered periods can require a larger heater.

Work out a rectangular pool’s approximate water volume using its internal water length × water width × actual water depth in metres. Use the water level, not the full wall height. For round pools, use the manufacturer’s stated water capacity or the appropriate circular-volume calculation. If your pool is near the limit, compare the larger options in our swimming pool heating range before ordering.

What does 5kW mean in everyday use?

A heat pump moves heat rather than producing all of it directly from electricity. At the warmer published test point, this model delivers 5kW of heat while using 0.98kW of electrical input, giving a stated coefficient of performance (COP) of 5.10. That is a laboratory operating point, not a promise that the same efficiency or output will be available throughout the season.

Published test condition Heating output Electrical input
Air 27°C dry bulb / 24.3°C wet bulb; water 26°C 5.0kW 0.98kW
Air 15°C dry bulb / 12°C wet bulb; water 26°C 3.3kW 0.89kW

The cooler-air figures show why season and pool size matter. Initial warm-up takes time, and heat is continually being lost through the water surface and surroundings. There is no reliable single “hours to heat your pool” figure without knowing the starting temperature, weather, cover and target temperature. Keep the cover on when the pool is not being used and allow the circulation system enough operating time for heating.

Controls, Bluetooth and cooling

The built-in controller lets you select the operating mode and set the water temperature without needing a phone. Bluetooth control is available through the Aqua Temp app for convenient adjustments nearby. Bluetooth is not Wi-Fi: this is not a promise of remote control over the internet when you are away from home.

As a reversible model, the Mini also has cooling and automatic modes. These can be useful where a small pool becomes warmer than wanted, although most UK customers will primarily use the heating function. The stated outdoor operating range is −7°C to 43°C; the lower end is an operating limit, not evidence that this compact unit is sized for winter swimming or winter pond heating.

Connections and circulation: check before buying

The 5kW model’s specified water flow is 1.8m³ per hour / 1,800 litres per hour through the heat pump; the supplier describes this as the minimum requirement. Check the flow your pool pump can provide after the filter, hoses and fittings have added their resistance. A pump’s headline maximum flow does not necessarily equal the flow delivered through the installed heater.

The supplied 32/38mm hose connections suit compatible flexible pool hoses. Some Intex and Bestway systems use threaded hose fittings and need the appropriate adaptors rather than a direct push-on connection. Check your exact pool and filter-pump fittings; this is not a universal adaptor kit for every above-ground pool.

Install the heater in the water circuit after the filter and before chemical dosing equipment, following the supplied instructions. The flow arrangement and any bypass or adjustment must suit the installation and manual; do not assume every existing pump can be connected without checking. The flow switch protects against inadequate circulation, but is not a substitute for correctly sized plumbing or a clean filter.

Positioning and electrical supply

The Mini needs a stable, level outdoor position with unrestricted fresh air and enough clearance for the fan discharge. Do not enclose it in a shed, cabinet or tight corner where the cold outlet air can be drawn back through the unit. Its small cabinet does not mean it can be installed flush against a wall: follow the clearance drawings in the manual.

Allow condensate to drain away, support the hoses and keep access to the controls clear. Consider the fan direction and nearby seating areas when choosing the position. The published sound-pressure figure is 50dB(A) at one metre; actual perceived noise depends on siting and surroundings.

The UK model is supplied with a UK plug, inline RCD and approximately four metres of cable. It requires a suitable earthed, RCD-protected supply and an electrical arrangement appropriate for pool equipment. “Plug and play” does not make an unsuitable outdoor socket or extension lead safe. Follow the instructions and obtain advice from a qualified electrician if the supply or location is uncertain.

The UK package includes the heat pump, 32/38mm hose connections, two metal hose clips, the UK power lead with inline RCD and the user instructions. Check the package contents on arrival. A circulation pump, pool filter, extra hose, proprietary adaptors and installation-specific bypass fittings are not included with this heater.

Can I use the Mini to heat a koi pond?

The supplier does not recommend the Mini for koi ponds, particularly winter heating. Maintaining a pond temperature through winter is a different heating duty from warming a small covered swimming pool in summer. Choose a suitable system from our pond heating range, with capacity assessed for your pond and intended winter conditions.

Thermotec Mini or Poolex Nano?

The Mini sits in the same compact-pool-heater shopping category as the Poolex Nano range. Compare the exact model rather than the family name: Nano versions differ in output, compressor control and connectivity. Our Poolex Nano FI 3 and Nano FI 5 listings provide alternatives to assess alongside the Mini’s Bluetooth controls, required flow and seasonal sizing. Check that any efficiency comparison uses the same test conditions.

Care, winter shutdown and instructions

Keep leaves and debris away from the air grille, maintain the pool filter and investigate flow warnings rather than repeatedly resetting the heater. Condensation during operation is normal, but unexplained water loss or a suspected leak still needs checking.

At winter shutdown, disconnect and fully drain the water circuit as instructed, then store the unit dry indoors. Switching off the electricity alone does not protect trapped water from freezing. Frost damage caused by water left inside is not covered by the supplier’s warranty. Refrigerant or electrical servicing must be carried out by appropriately qualified personnel.

Download the Thermotec Mini user manual for the connection, clearance, operating and winterisation instructions. The manual covers more than one output; use the 5kW column for this listing.

Frequently asked questions

Will it work with my Intex or Bestway pool?

Potentially, if the pool volume and season are within the guidance, the real circulation flow is suitable and the hoses can be connected correctly. Check any threaded hose adaptors your particular system needs. There is no blanket compatibility promise for every Intex or Bestway pool.

Does the Mini use 5kW of electricity?

No. The 5kW headline describes heat output at the warmer test point. Electrical input at that point is 0.98kW. Output, input and efficiency change with operating conditions.

Can I control it away from home?

The supplied Mini offers local Bluetooth app control, not Wi-Fi internet control. You can also use the controller on the unit without a phone.

Do I still need my pool pump and a cover?

Yes. A suitable circulation pump and filter are needed to move clean water through the heater. A cover is important for retaining warmth, and the supplier’s pool-volume guidance assumes it is used for most of the day.

Can it be left full of water over winter?

No. Follow the shutdown instructions, drain all water and store the unit dry indoors. Trapped water can freeze even when the heater is switched off.
