Mesh pump protection bag for cleaner pump intake and safer wildlife ponds

The Oase Pump Shield is a simple but very useful accessory for pond pumps, fountain pumps and water feature pumps that are placed directly in the pond. It is designed to sit around the pump like a large mesh protection bag, helping to stop small leaves, blanketweed fragments, pond debris and wildlife from being drawn straight into the pump cage or fountain nozzle.

This is particularly useful on fountain pumps, where even small pieces of debris can quickly spoil the fountain pattern or block narrow nozzle openings. It can also be helpful for filter pumps and waterfall pumps that are used in wildlife ponds, heavily planted ponds or ponds where there are newts, tadpoles or fish fry. Rather than leaving the pump fully exposed, the Oase Pump Shield creates a wider intake area around the pump, which can reduce the chance of small wildlife reaching the pump intake.

Why use a pump shield?

Pond pumps often work in areas where leaves, algae, silt and plant fragments naturally collect. A normal pump cage will protect the pump from larger debris, but fine material can still reach the impeller housing or fountain fittings. The Oase Pump Shield gives an extra layer of protection before debris reaches the pump. It is not a replacement for routine pump cleaning, but it can help reduce nuisance blockages and make maintenance easier, especially during spring, autumn and periods of heavy plant growth.

The shield measures 500mm x 500mm and uses a fine 1.5mm mesh. This helps prevent small debris and small pond creatures from passing through, while still allowing water to move through to the pump. The bag opens along one side so the pump can be placed inside, then the opening can be closed using the drawstring and toggle. The pump hose or cable can be routed out through the opening before it is tightened.

Technical information

How to use it

Place the pump inside the shield, route the hose and cable through the opening, then close the drawstring around them. The bag should be positioned so water can reach the mesh freely from all sides. For best results, check and rinse the shield regularly, especially in ponds with heavy leaf fall, blanketweed or fine suspended debris.
