Gordon Low PVC Pond Liner – 0.5mm
Gordon Low 0.5mm PVC pond liner provides a flexible waterproof lining for small and medium garden ponds. Choose a sheet large enough to follow the complete excavated profile, including the sides, shelves and the material needed to secure the edge. The size in the selector is the flat liner size, not the finished pond’s length and width.
Our range includes convenient pre-cut sheets and the clearly labelled 25m roll options. The smaller 2m x 2m, 2m x 3m and 3m x 2.5m sheets are useful for compact projects where a larger pack would leave substantial offcuts. Underlay, edging materials, adhesives and pond equipment are separate unless explicitly included in the option description.
Choosing PVC or rubber
PVC is worth considering when you want an economical lining for a smaller pond and can prepare a smooth, well-protected excavation. The 0.5mm material is flexible enough to follow the shape of the pond, but flexibility does not mean it should be stretched across unsupported hollows or sharp corners. Good ground preparation matters whichever liner you choose.
For a different material, compare our Gordon Low EPDM pond liner. The best choice depends on the project, the ground conditions and how the edges and penetrations will be constructed. Do not choose purely by the price of a square metre: compare the sheet size you actually need, suitable underlay and the fittings required to complete the pond.
Measure the pond before ordering
For initial planning, a rectangular pond can be estimated by adding twice the maximum depth and an edging allowance to its maximum length, then doing the same for its width. An allowance of 0.6m overall in each direction leaves approximately 0.3m at each opposing edge, but the correct allowance depends on your chosen fixing detail. A wide anchor trench or substantial edging may need more.
For example, a pond approximately 2m long, 1m wide and 0.5m deep gives an initial estimate of 3.6m x 2.6m when using that 0.6m overall allowance. You would then compare available sheets that exceed both required dimensions. A 2m x 3m liner would not be large enough simply because its area resembles the water surface area.
Before committing to a size, measure the completed excavation with a flexible tape laid along the actual profile. Include shelves, changes in depth, the bottom and the edge detail. Gordon Low specifically recommends this final profile measurement rather than relying only on a planning calculation. Irregular ponds, streams and waterfalls deserve particular care because a simple rectangle may not represent the material needed.
Prepare the base and use underlay
Remove stones, sharp roots and building debris from the excavation. Check the shape and stability of the base and sides, and correct unsupported hollows before laying the liner. Underlay provides protection, but it does not make an unsuitable or unstable excavation ready for lining. Think about where people will stand during installation and how heavy edging materials will be placed without dragging them over the sheet.
Our Gordon Low white geotextile pond underlay is a related option to consider. Cover the surfaces that will contact the liner and follow the underlay instructions for overlaps and securing it during installation. Keep the liner supported throughout the pond profile; avoid leaving it bridging voids beneath shelves or at the base of the walls.
Lay, fill and finish carefully
Unpack the selected sheet in a clean area and check its dimensions before fitting. Position it centrally so that sufficient material remains at every edge. Allow the liner to settle into the excavation and arrange folds neatly without pulling it tight. Work carefully around shelves and corners, and avoid walking on unprotected material with footwear that could trap sharp grit.
Introduce water gradually while checking that the liner settles against the prepared surfaces. Keep reviewing the edge allowance as the water’s weight draws material into the pond. Do not trim surplus liner before it has settled and the final water level and edge arrangement have been checked. Once cut away, an edging allowance cannot simply be put back.
For bottom drains, skimmers or other penetrations, use a fitting and sealing method expressly suitable for the liner material and follow its installation instructions. Do not improvise a join with an unrelated sealant. If a project needs several sheets joined together, plan the approved joining method before ordering rather than treating a seam as a last-minute solution.
Guarantee and ongoing care
Gordon Low currently states a lifetime guarantee for PVC liners up to 140 square metres and a 20-year guarantee for larger sizes, subject to its guarantee terms. This distinction matters for the largest rolls: 25m x 6m is 150 square metres and 25m x 8m is 200 square metres. A guarantee is not a promise that punctures, accidental damage or unsuitable installation are covered. Retain the product label and purchase details.
After installation, protect exposed edges from avoidable mechanical damage and take care when moving rocks, planting baskets or equipment. If the pond begins losing water, first check pipework, waterfalls and connections before assuming that the liner is responsible. For a confirmed small PVC puncture, compare the Oase PVC pond liner repair kit and check its instructions against the repair conditions. A repair kit is not a substitute for choosing a correctly sized liner at the start.
