Surface readings and pond use
An infrared thermometer measures the surface in its field of view. It does not measure the temperature of water below the surface and cannot replace an immersed probe for checking conditions at depth. Use it for appropriate surface checks and interpret the result according to the material and viewing conditions.
Distance and target size
The Mini RayTemp has a 12:1 distance-to-spot ratio: at 60cm from the target, the measured area is about 5cm across. Move closer when measuring a smaller target and ensure the whole measurement area is on the intended surface. The laser is an aiming aid, not the temperature sensor.
Accuracy and emissivity
ETI states ±2°C accuracy from 0 to 330°C; below 0°C the specification is ±4°C or ±4% of the reading, whichever is greater. The fixed emissivity is 0.95. Shiny or polished surfaces can give misleading results, so follow the manufacturer’s guidance on suitable targets.
Display and battery
The thermometer offers Celsius and Fahrenheit readings with a 0.1-degree resolution, a backlit display and low-battery indication. It switches off automatically after ten seconds. Power comes from a 9V PP3 alkaline battery, with a stated continuous-use life of 80 hours.
Care and storage
Keep the optical sensor clean and protected, and follow the supplied cleaning instructions. Avoid pointing the laser at eyes, including those of fish or other animals. Store the thermometer dry and do not immerse the instrument. A calibration certificate or protective pouch is not included in this listing.
