Elecro Optima Compact 9-kW Digital controls (With WIFI)
The Elecro Optima Compact 9 kW is a digitally controlled inline heater with an all-titanium flow tube and heating element. It is designed for koi ponds, pools and aquatic systems where accurate temperature control, corrosion resistance and remote monitoring matter.
A colour touchscreen provides set-point control from 0–45°C, while built-in Wi-Fi allows the heater to be monitored and adjusted through Elecro’s app. The unit also includes a flow switch and a manual-reset 60°C safety cut-out.
Why the Optima Compact stands out
- All-titanium flow tube and heating element
- Digital touchscreen with 0–45°C control range
- Wi-Fi monitoring and app control
- Flow-switch protection
- Manual-reset over-temperature cut-out
- Wall or floor mounting

Electrical and hydraulic planning
The 9 kW model must be connected to a correctly designed, RCD-protected circuit by a competent electrician. Do not assume an existing pond socket or extension lead is suitable. Confirm cable size, protective device and isolation from the actual run and installation method.
Maintain at least 4 m³/h through the heater whenever it is energised and keep the flow within the 17m³/h maximum. Fit the heater after effective filtration, use the supplied union arrangement without restricting the bore and install it where the screen, reset and unions remain accessible.
Our practical view: Electric resistance heating is simple and controllable, but running cost rises directly with heat loss. Covering the pond, protecting exposed pipework and choosing a realistic winter set point often saves more than changing the heater by one size.
Frequently asked questions
Can I plug it into a normal socket?
Not by assumption. The circuit must be assessed and installed by a qualified electrician using the rating plate and supplied installation instructions.
Will it heat any pond to any temperature?
No. Required output depends on pond volume, exposed surface, insulation, wind, ambient temperature and target rise.
Can it run without water flow?
No. The flow switch is a safety device; the system must be designed so adequate circulation is established before heating.
Is titanium suitable for salt?
Titanium offers excellent corrosion resistance, but the complete installation and water chemistry must still remain within Elecro’s current limits.
Does Wi-Fi replace local controls?
No. Commission and retain access to the local touchscreen and safety reset even when app control is used.

Planning an Optima Compact installation
Make space for servicing as well as the heater
Choose a dry, permanently weatherproof plant area with room to reach the screen, unions and electrical isolation. An IP44 rating does not make an exposed garden position suitable. Elecro permits wall or floor mounting, but the installer must follow the orientation and clearance diagrams supplied with the unit. Think about how the heater will be disconnected for maintenance before fixing the surrounding pipework in place.
Locate the heater after the filter so that suspended debris is removed before water enters it. Its installation instructions place it before chemical dosing equipment. The flow switch must be at the outlet: this is a direction-sensitive component, so the pipe route should be planned around the manufacturer’s diagram. The heater must remain full of water during operation, with air purged from the circuit before heat is enabled.
Understand the cost of 9kW heating
For budgeting, this 9kW resistance heater uses approximately 9kWh of electricity for each hour that its element operates continuously at rated output. Multiply that energy figure by your own price per kWh. At an illustrative tariff of 25p per kWh, one uninterrupted hour would cost approximately £2.25 for the heater alone. This is a worked example, not an estimate of your electricity tariff or a promise of daily running cost.
The thermostat may switch the element off for part of the day once the target is reached. Conversely, severe heat loss can keep it working for much longer. Circulation equipment consumes electricity separately. Compare whole-system costs over the intended season, and account for the pond cover, exposed surface area and insulation. If long periods of heating are expected, compare the installation space and operating conditions of our air source heat pumps before deciding between the two technologies.
Keep circulation and temperature control working together
A heater cannot compensate for a blocked filter, closed valve or air-filled pipe. Establish the specified water flow before asking the unit to heat, and maintain it while heating is enabled. A flow warning should prompt a check of the circulation system, rather than repeated attempts to reset the controls. For a koi pond, heating schedules also need to respect the separate requirements of filtration and aeration; do not assume a pool-oriented control programme is an appropriate schedule for the entire pond system.
App choice and seasonal care
Use the app specified for the serial number on your heater. Elecro distinguishes its TouchSmart and TouchSmart Plus generations, so an older online setup guide may show a different interface from a newly supplied unit. Keep the local controls accessible and commission the installation before relying on remote adjustments.
Plan servicing and winter shutdown with the installer. Elecro recommends periodic cleaning and inspection, and a heater taken out of use in freezing conditions must be drained as instructed. Switching off the electricity alone does not remove trapped water. Keep the Optima Compact installation manual with your commissioning information, and follow the version supplied with the exact heater for electrical protection, water chemistry and maintenance.
