Preformed ponds give you a defined shape and a series of planting depths for a new garden pond. A rigid shell is a practical choice when you want an established outline to work around, with the deeper basin and marginal areas already moulded into the pond. Choose a size that suits your available space, access and plans for planting or fishkeeping.

Choosing a pond size
Measure the intended site and the route into the garden before choosing your shell. Nominal water capacity is a useful starting point, but it does not tell you the shape of the planting shelves or the amount of open water that will remain after planting. Use the actual shell to mark the excavation rather than treating its overall dimensions as a rectangular digging template.
If you intend to keep fish, plan for their adult size, stocking level and filtration needs. A small ornamental pond and a dedicated koi pond have different requirements. We can help you choose suitable equipment for the pond you are building.
Installation and planting
A preformed pond needs a level, supported base and appropriate backfill around its shaped sides and shelves. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, check the level in both directions and support the shell progressively as it is filled. Do not use a rigid pond shell as an unsupported freestanding tank.
Plan your edging, plants and equipment access together. Plant baskets should sit at depths suited to the plants you select, while pumps and filters need to remain accessible for cleaning. Keep soil and surface runoff out of the pond and avoid placing unsupported heavy loads on its rim.
Preformed shell or flexible liner?
