PVC Pressure Pipe Socket to Female BSP Thread

Join an imperial PVC pressure pipe to a matching male BSP connection with this straight adaptor. One end is a plain female socket for solvent welding onto the outside of the correct pressure pipe. The other end has an internal female BSP thread. Choose the 1½ inch, 2 inch or 2½ inch option to suit both parts of your installation. Each selection supplies one fitting, with pipe, solvent cement and any required thread seal sold separately.

This is a useful transition where rigid pipework meets a threaded outlet, inlet or another fitting. It is particularly important to identify which connection is on the equipment before ordering: the adaptor’s female thread needs a matching male thread, whereas its plain socket needs compatible pipe. Two female threads will not join directly, and a fitting that almost fits is not an acceptable substitute for the correct size.

Choose the connection size

Option Plain end Threaded end
1½ inch Female socket for 1½ inch imperial pressure pipe 1½ inch female BSP
2 inch Female socket for 2 inch imperial pressure pipe 2 inch female BSP
2½ inch Female socket for 2½ inch imperial pressure pipe 2½ inch female BSP

The size in the selector is the nominal connection size. It does not describe the overall length of the adaptor or the diameter of its outer body. All three sizes are straight adaptors; none is a reducing fitting. If your equipment thread and pipe are different sizes, choose a properly specified reducing connection instead of trying to bridge the difference with extra adhesive or thread tape.

Imperial pressure pipe and waste pipe are different systems

Check the marking on the pipe and the specification of the equipment you are connecting. Black waste pipe, metric pressure pipe and imperial pressure pipe can have similar descriptions but different mating dimensions. A nominal 1½ inch waste fitting is not automatically interchangeable with a 1½ inch imperial pressure fitting. The same caution applies when a metric dimension appears close to an imperial size.

For a matching rigid pipe run, compare our imperial pressure pipe. Measure existing components carefully if their markings are missing. A solvent-weld socket is designed around a specific pipe outside diameter and insertion depth; it should not be sanded out or packed with cement to accept the wrong system. Confirm the fit before making any permanent joint.

Plan access for servicing

A threaded connection can be unscrewed, but the connected pipework must allow the fitting to rotate. Once this adaptor is glued into a fixed run, that movement may no longer be possible. Think about how you will remove the pump or other equipment for cleaning before assembling the pipework.

A separate plain pressure pipe union can provide a convenient break in the run. Alternatively, compare our pressure pipe pump connectors where a union arrangement is better suited to the installation. Leave enough room to operate union nuts and to lift the equipment clear. Support the pipe independently rather than allowing the adaptor to carry the weight of a pump, a long pipe run or a heavy valve.

Making the solvent-weld connection

Cut the correct pipe square, remove burrs and prepare the end and socket as required by the chosen PVC cement manufacturer. Work on clean, dry mating surfaces and check the intended insertion depth before applying adhesive. Solvent cement is a joining system for compatible materials; it is not a general gap filler or a repair for a cracked fitting.

Use the cleaner, cement application method and curing period specified for the actual pipe, fitting and adhesive. Ambient conditions, pipe size and service requirements can affect the waiting time, so there is no single cure time stated for this adaptor. Keep the assembly undisturbed during curing and do not fill or pressurise it before the adhesive instructions permit.

Making the threaded connection

Inspect both threads for damage or dirt and start the connection by hand so you can detect misalignment. The correct sealing method depends on the mating component and whether its design seals on the thread or against a washer or sealing face. Follow the equipment and fitting instructions; do not assume that every threaded connection needs the same amount or type of sealant.

Avoid forcing a metal fitting into the plastic adaptor or tightening it merely to achieve a preferred orientation. Excessive tightening can damage the female connection. The pressure capability of the complete installation depends on every component and on operating conditions. No universal bar rating is claimed here for an unidentified assembly.

Before restarting the pond system

Check that the pipe is supported, service points are accessible and the required curing time has elapsed. Reintroduce water in a controlled way and inspect the plain and threaded joints separately for leaks. Recheck after the pump has been running, because vibration or unsupported pipework may reveal a problem that was not obvious during assembly.

If a joint leaks, isolate and drain that section safely before working on it. Identify whether the problem is at the thread or the solvent joint instead of coating the outside with adhesive. For alternative connection arrangements, see our male-threaded socket nipples and BSP threaded reducers. Choosing the right transition at the planning stage makes future filter maintenance much easier.
