PVC Imperial Pressure Pipe Unions

A pipe union gives you a planned point at which to separate a pond pipe run for maintenance. The two plain sockets are bonded to matching imperial PVC pressure pipe, while the central union connection can be undone when the system is isolated and drained. This is useful beside pumps, UV clarifiers and filter equipment that may need to come out of a tightly arranged filter bay.

Choose the same nominal imperial size as the pipe on both sides. The range includes a small ¾ inch option alongside 1 inch, 1½ inch, 2 inch, 3 inch and 4 inch unions. Each option is one complete plain socket union. Pipe, solvent cement, supports and isolation valves are separate purchases, so check the full job before ordering.

What a union does differently

A plain straight joiner makes a permanent connection between two lengths of pipe. A union also joins the pipe, but adds a removable connection between its two sides. That distinction matters when a pump has to be lifted out, a UV unit needs bench servicing, or a section of plumbing needs to be moved without cutting into the main run.

The union is not a valve. Undoing it does not stop the water behind it, and it must not be opened while the system is under pressure. Plan isolation on the appropriate sides, switch the relevant equipment off and drain the section before separating it. On an installation below pond water level, account for the water that can continue to flow from the pond even after the pump is switched off.

Choose the correct pipe system

These are plain fittings for the imperial PVC pressure-pipe system. The inch designation is a nominal pipe size; it is not an instruction to measure that number of inches across the outside of the pipe. A metric fitting, waste-pipe fitting or hose connector with a similar-looking label may not fit. Check the pipe marking and the corresponding fitting specification before applying any cement.

For a new run, select matching imperial PVC pressure pipe. Where the two pipes are different sizes, a same-size union alone will not make the transition: use the appropriate pressure-pipe reducer as part of a planned assembly. Keep the pipe diameter suited to the flow requirement rather than selecting a smaller union simply because it is easier to fit into a narrow gap.

Plain sockets or a threaded equipment connection?

The options on this page have plain sockets for solvent-weld pipe connections. The large union nut is part of the removable joint; it is not a BSP connection intended to screw directly onto a pump outlet. If the equipment itself has a threaded port, choose a suitable connector for that port instead of trying to adapt this union by its central nut.

Compare our pressure-pipe pump connectors and male threaded unions when a threaded-to-plain transition is needed. Check thread size, male or female connection and the equipment manufacturer’s requirements. Sharing the word “union” does not make these different connection styles interchangeable.

Leave room to use the removable joint

Before cutting pipe, arrange the equipment and fittings in their intended positions. Leave working space around the union nut and enough movement to separate the two halves when required. A union placed directly against a wall or trapped between rigidly fixed components can be difficult to use, even if it initially fits into the available space.

Support the pipe independently so its weight is not hanging from a pump outlet or pulling the union out of alignment. Position equipment where it can be removed without disturbing unrelated plumbing. For a pump with fixed pipework on both inlet and outlet, consider whether a removable joint is needed on each side. Count the required fittings from the complete layout, not just the easiest visible connection.

Bonding the plain socket ends

Use a solvent cement intended for the relevant PVC pressure-pipe application, following its preparation and curing instructions. Pipe ends should be cut square, deburred and prepared with the specified cleaner. Check the planned assembly and alignment before bonding because the socket joints are intended to be permanent. Work in suitable ventilation and follow the adhesive label.

Keep cement away from the removable joint, its sealing surfaces and the union nut. Do not use adhesive as a remedy for a damaged seal or an incorrectly sized fitting. Allow the manufacturer’s full curing period before filling or pressurising the pipework; a joint that feels firm is not necessarily ready for service. Cure time depends on the adhesive and installation conditions.

Checks after installation and during servicing

Check that the joint is aligned, the seal is clean and correctly seated, and the nut is properly secured in accordance with the supplied fitting instructions. Fill and test the assembly while it remains accessible, checking both the bonded sockets and the central union joint. If a leak appears, isolate and drain the section before investigating it.

During future servicing, protect the open pipe ends from debris and keep the mating faces clean. Do not assume that a spare nut or half-union from another brand will mate correctly, even when the nominal pipe size matches. Retain the complete fitting’s identification and use compatible service parts. Planning these details at installation makes routine maintenance much simpler later.
