Omega Threaded Double Union Ball Valves

Use an Omega threaded double union ball valve where your pond plumbing needs a shut-off point with female BSP connections. The valve has a PVC body, EPDM seals and a union at each end, allowing the central assembly to be removed once the system has been isolated and drained. Choose ¾ inch, 1 inch, 1½ inch or 2 inch to match the nominal BSP size of the male fittings you will connect.

This range has threaded connections, rather than plain sockets for solvent welding. That distinction matters when planning a pump bay: a pipe that fits a plain socket cannot simply be pushed into a threaded valve and glued. Check the connections at both ends of the intended installation before ordering. Each selection supplies one complete valve; additional adaptors, pipe, sealing materials and mounting hardware are separate.

Available sizes and connections

Valve size Inlet and outlet Union arrangement
¾ inch ¾ inch female BSP Double union
1 inch 1 inch female BSP Double union
1½ inch 1½ inch female BSP Double union
2 inch 2 inch female BSP Double union

The inch size describes the nominal thread connection. It is not the outside diameter of the valve body and should not be compared directly with a measurement across the union nut. When replacing an existing valve, identify the thread system and nominal size from its markings or documentation. A similar-looking metric or differently threaded fitting is not necessarily compatible.

Where a threaded valve is useful

A shut-off valve can help make routine pump or filter maintenance more manageable by providing a planned isolation point. It is particularly useful where equipment already has compatible male BSP adaptors or where a threaded transition is preferable to a permanent solvent-weld connection. Position the valve where you can reach the handle and both union nuts without dismantling neighbouring equipment.

For plain imperial pipe connections, compare our plain double union ball valves. For a transition from rigid pipe to a male threaded connection, see our pressure pipe socket nipples. Check the actual sizes on both components: choosing a valve and adaptor with matching numbers is only useful when their connection systems also match.

Double union access

The unions are service connections, separate from the female BSP inlet and outlet threads. Their purpose is to let you release the valve body from its end connections without rotating the whole pipe run. This can make inspection or replacement easier, but adequate clearance still needs to be designed into the installation.

Before loosening a union, stop the pump, isolate the section from every water source and relieve pressure. A closed valve does not make every adjacent connection safe to dismantle: water can remain trapped, and an upstream pond or filter can continue to feed a line. Provide a controlled way to drain the section and keep electrical equipment away from escaping water.

Assembling the threaded connections

Start with clean, undamaged mating threads. Offer the male fitting squarely to the female connection and begin by hand so you can feel whether it engages correctly. If it binds immediately or sits at an angle, stop and check the thread size and condition. Forcing the connection can damage the plastic and create a leak that tightening will not solve.

Use a sealing method suitable for the actual components and follow their instructions. Some assemblies seal at a face or washer, while others rely on the thread seal. Do not assume that adding more tape or applying more force improves the joint. Avoid using a metal fitting as a lever against the PVC body, and do not tighten solely to bring a handle into a preferred orientation.

Support and flow planning

Support the connected pipework independently so that the valve does not carry a long unsupported run or the weight of attached equipment. Plan for access around the handle, union nuts and any nearby electrical controls. Suitable pipe clips can help organise a rigid pipe run, with the fixing method chosen for the surface and the load.

Choose the pipe and valve size as part of the complete hydraulic layout. A valve is not a way to increase the capacity of a narrow pipe, and installing several small transitions can restrict a system. Check the pump and filter requirements before reducing a connection. The pressure and temperature limits of the complete installation depend on all its components; no universal working-pressure figure is claimed for an unspecified assembly.

Ball valve or non-return valve?

This is a manually operated ball valve. It provides a deliberate shut-off point; it does not close automatically if the pump stops or flow reverses. If your layout also needs backflow control, select a suitable non-return valve for the flow, pipework and installation conditions. The two types have different jobs and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Checks before returning the system to service

Confirm that the seals are correctly seated, the unions are assembled and all threaded joints are complete. Reintroduce water in a controlled way, inspect each connection for leaks and check again while the pump is running. Keep the handle accessible for later maintenance. For a separate removable joint elsewhere in the run, our plain pressure pipe unions provide another service point without adding a second shut-off valve.
