HI38904 measures total hardness using drop-count titration. Use the drop-count method and reporting factor in its supplied instructions.

The maker’s 10ml procedure counts drops of HI3890-0 titrant to the specified endpoint. Under that procedure, each titrant drop represents 10 ppm as CaCO₃. Follow the exact sample volume and count the titrant drops as instructed.

Taking the reading

Use the stated sample volume, add the required indicator and follow the titration procedure to its specified colour endpoint. Use the result factor for that sample volume and keep the reporting units with the reading.

For example, eight titrant drops in the manufacturer’s 10ml procedure correspond to 80 ppm as CaCO₃. This example uses the titrant count, not the initial indicator drop.

Record the date, result, method and units. Choose a kit whose scale covers the concentrations you need to distinguish, and follow its instructions for sample interferences.
