Dirty Water Pumps for Pond and Site Drainage
Oase ProMax MudDrain for rapid removal of silty water and suspended solids – not continuous pond filtration
A dirty-water drainage pump is built to empty contaminated water quickly. It is not a normal pond filter pump and it is not designed to sit in a wildlife pond circulating water every day. Our current model is the Oase ProMax MudDrain 20000, a robust submersible drainage pump for ponds, sumps, excavations and flooded areas.
The MudDrain 20000 is published at up to 20,000 l/h, 10 m maximum head and 35 mm solids passage, with a 950 W motor. Those figures make it very capable for emptying, but power and solids handling are very different from the gentle continuous duty of an energy-efficient filter pump.
Before draining a pond, plan where the water and sludge will go, protect fish and amphibians and make sure the discharge cannot flood a neighbour, building or watercourse.
What ProMax MudDrain 20000 Is Designed to Do
| Maximum flow | 20,000 l/h |
|---|---|
| Maximum head | 10 m |
| Maximum solids | 35 mm |
| Rated input | 950 W |
| Maximum immersion depth | 7 m |
Oase ProMax MudDrain 20000 suits muddy water, rainwater and drainage tasks with suspended debris within the stated limit. It is not for stones, fibrous weed or solid objects merely because they fit through 35 mm.
Float Control and Safe Discharge
The adjustable float allows automatic start and stop as the level changes. Give it room to move freely; a float trapped against a chamber wall can leave a pump running or prevent it starting.
Use a discharge hose that can handle the flow without kinking, secure the outlet and check the permitted destination. Dirty pond water can contain nutrients, medication or invasive plant fragments.
Draining a Living Pond
Move livestock into aerated temperature-matched holding water before the level becomes unsafe. Keep some mature filter media wet and oxygenated if the pond will be restarted.
The last layer of sludge may be better removed with a pond vacuum rather than forcing a drainage pump to run at an unstable shallow level.
Our advice: MudDrain is a powerful emptying tool. Use a normal filter pump for continuous pond circulation and a vacuum for controlled finishing work.

Frequently Asked Questions
What solids size can MudDrain 20000 pass?
Oase publishes a maximum particle size of 35 mm for suitable suspended material.
What is the maximum flow?
Up to 20,000 litres per hour at little or no head.
What is the maximum head?
10 metres, where useful flow approaches zero.
Can it run a pond filter continuously?
That is not its intended efficient duty. Use a dedicated pond filter pump for continuous circulation.
Does it have a float switch?
Yes. The float controls operation as the water level changes and must be free to move.
Can it pump blanket weed?
Fibrous weed can wrap around or obstruct a pump and should be removed separately.
Will it remove every last millimetre of water?
No drainage pump removes all water and sludge. Final cleaning may need a vacuum or manual method.
Can fish stay in the pond while it drains?
No. Move fish and other livestock safely before the level, oxygen or temperature becomes dangerous.
Can the water discharge into a stream?
Do not assume so. Check environmental and drainage requirements and avoid spreading treatments or invasive material.
Does maximum flow equal the flow through my filter?
No. Maximum flow is measured at little or no head. Lift, pipe friction and equipment resistance reduce the delivered figure.
Is maximum head a usable operating height?
No. It is the shut-off end of the curve, where useful flow approaches zero.
Should I use a larger pipe bore?
Usually yes. Generous, smooth pipework reduces friction and can improve both flow and efficiency.
Can you help size the pump?
Yes. Send the required delivered flow, vertical lift, pipe bore and length, fittings and connected equipment.
How often should a pond pump be cleaned?
Inspect it whenever output falls and during routine maintenance. Clean the intake and rotor without damaging seals or ceramic parts.
Can I run the pump dry for a quick test?
No. Prime or submerge it as instructed; even brief dry running can damage seals and bearings.
Does a controller make an oversized pump efficient?
Control is useful, but heavy permanent throttling usually means the pump or pipework should be reconsidered.
