Charles Austen Pond and Water Pumps
A practical guide to choosing between sixteen very different pump families
Charles Austen makes far more than one type of pond pump. The range runs from 3 W aquarium circulation pumps to 56,000 l/h dirty-water machines and high-head pumps for commercial returns. Putting them all under one generic “pond pump” description hides the differences that matter.
Use this hub to start with the job: compact clean-water movement, a pond filter, a fountain, low-level draining, high-head transfer or dirty-water emptying. The links below take you to model tables and genuinely specific advice for each family.
If you send us the required flow, lift, pipework and what the water contains, we can help narrow the list before you spend money on the wrong technology.
Choose the Family by Application
Compact clean-water circulation
HX, HX65, HX88 Mini, HR and DS cover aquariums, reservoirs and small features. HR adds adjustment; DS adds bottom intake.
Pond filters and waterfalls
E Series uses a broad cage and 6 mm solids handling for submerged pond filtration. T Series offers the widest flow and head range. BP adds optional remote flow control.
Fountains and pressure
HX88F is the fountain version of HX88. HM gives useful pressure in a compact body, while L Series covers high-head professional duties.
Draining and dirty water
D Series uses a bottom intake, 110 mm outlet and up to 8 mm solids passage for rapid pond, tank and pool emptying.
How We Help You Choose
We calculate from the flow required at the destination, vertical lift, pipe bore and length, fittings and connected equipment. We also ask whether the pump must pass solids, sit underwater, run externally or be controlled. Those details often remove most families immediately.
Please do not choose from the biggest litres-per-hour number. The right pump is the model that meets the duty efficiently and can be maintained in the actual installation.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Charles Austen range is best for pond filtration?
E Series is the clearest submerged filter-pump family; T Series covers a wider range of flows and heads.
Which range is best for a small water feature?
HX, HX65 or HX88 Mini, depending on required flow and lift.
Which range has remote control?
BP Series supports the optional compatible remote receiver.
Which range drains to a low level?
DS covers compact tanks and reservoirs; D Series covers very high-volume pond and tank emptying.
Which range handles dirty water?
D Series is the dedicated high-volume dirty-water family and is stated to pass suspended solids up to 8 mm.
Which range is for fountains?
HX88F is fountain-oriented; larger professional displays may need a dedicated fountain-pump range.
Which range provides high head?
L Series and the upper T models are the high-head choices.
Can these pumps run externally?
Some families allow flooded external use, but not all. Check the exact page and manufacturer instructions.
What details do you need to size a pump?
Required delivered flow, static lift, pipe bore and length, fittings, equipment and water debris level.
Does a larger model always cost more to run?
Usually, but hydraulic efficiency and operating point matter. Compare wattage only among pumps that meet the same duty.
Can one pump feed a filter and waterfall?
It can, but each branch changes the flow and needs balancing. Separate pumps often make maintenance easier.
What is the difference between HX88 and HX88F?
HX88 is the normal circulation range; HX88F is the fountain-oriented version.
Can a clean-water pump sit on the pond floor?
Only where it is protected from leaves, silt and fibrous algae. A caged filter pump is usually more suitable.
Do you stock pipework and fittings?
Yes. Use the related pipework category to build a low-loss installation.
Can you check an existing pump replacement?
Yes. Send the old model, pipework, lift and the actual job it performs.
