Compact pressure-oriented pumps for aquariums, reservoirs and elevated water features

HM is the pressure-oriented compact range. Compared with an ordinary circulation pump of similar flow, these models provide stronger head: HM1000 reaches 2.2 m and HM5600 reaches 4.7 m. Charles Austen supplies a filter sock to help catch fine debris and algae.

This makes HM useful when water must climb to a header tank, hydroponic return or elevated feature. It is not a substitute for a large caged filter pump in a leafy pond; the compact body and filter sock need regular access.

The range can be used submersed or in a correctly flooded external installation.

Maximum figures are comparison points measured under favourable conditions. Delivered flow falls as head and system resistance increase.

Head pressure is the reason to choose HM

Use HM where a modest flow needs to overcome meaningful lift. The progression through 2.2, 3.0, 3.5, 4.1 and 4.7 m makes it easier to avoid buying a much larger-flow pond pump solely for pressure.

Read the curve at the intended lift. HM1000 will not deliver 1,050 l/h at 2.2 m.

Filter sock and water cleanliness

The supplied sock can catch fine material, but as it blocks the flow falls and pump load changes. Rinse it frequently and never let it collapse tightly around the intake.

Where the water carries leaves or string algae, pre-screen the pump or use a different family.

Submerged or flooded external installation

External use needs a permanently flooded, airtight inlet below water level. Provide unions and isolation so the sock and impeller can be serviced without draining the system.

Our advice: choose HM for pressure, not for debris. It works best in clean or screened water where the filter sock can be reached.

Does HM include a filter sock?

Can HM pump dirty pond water?

Can HM feed a header tank?

Why not use a low-head pump?

A low-head pump may lose most of its flow on an elevated return even if its maximum l/h appears similar.

Does maximum flow tell me what will reach the filter or waterfall?

No. Maximum flow is measured with little or no head. Lift, pipe length, fittings, hose diameter and connected equipment all reduce delivered flow.

Is maximum head the height at which I get full flow?

No. Maximum head is the shut-off end of the performance curve, where useful flow approaches zero.

Should I use the largest connection possible?

Usually yes. Generous, smooth pipework reduces friction and helps the pump deliver more water for the same electricity.

Can I reduce flow with a valve?

A valve can trim a water-pump output where the instructions allow, but a correctly sized pump or approved controller is normally more efficient than heavy throttling.

How often should I clean the pump?

Inspect it whenever flow falls and as part of routine pond maintenance. Keep the intake, rotor and impeller chamber clear without damaging seals or shafts.

Can you help size a HM pump?

Yes. Send us the required flow, vertical lift, pipe bore and length, major fittings and the equipment the pump will feed.

Why is my real flow lower than the model name?

Model names and maximum-flow figures do not include the resistance of a real installation. A flow test at the return is the best check after installation.

Can this series be installed externally?

The manufacturer describes the range as suitable for submersible or external use, but the exact flooded-suction, priming and weather-protection instructions must be followed.
