Bottom-intake compact pumps that can drain tanks and reservoirs to a low level

DS pumps are built around a simple useful feature: the intake is at the bottom, allowing a tank or hydroponic reservoir to be drained far lower than with many side-intake pumps. The range spans 850 to 4,800 l/h, so it covers everything from a small nutrient tank to a larger transfer duty.

Charles Austen describes the range as suitable for submersible or external use and provides an easy-open cover for rotor and impeller cleaning. For external installation it still needs a flooded, correctly plumbed arrangement; it is not a self-priming suction pump.

The DS700 and DS1000 are genuinely small. DS3000, DS4000 and DS5000 provide the more useful head for elevated returns.

Why bottom intake is useful

In propagation, aquarium maintenance and nutrient reservoirs, leaving the final few centimetres can be awkward. The DS intake draws close to the base, reducing manual bailing. It is also useful for temporary transfer from a clean sump.

The intake is not a vacuum cleaner. Sediment, roots and loose media still need to be kept away from the impeller.

Choose from both flow and lift

DS700 and DS1000 suit short, low-level circulation. DS2000 and DS3000 cover moderate transfer, while DS4000 and DS5000 provide 3.5 and 4 m maximum head for taller systems.

If the outlet is near the maximum-head figure, choose a stronger pump because the delivered flow will be very small.

External use needs flooded suction

When used outside the water, install the pump below water level with a permanently flooded inlet and no air leaks. Provide isolation valves and never allow it to run dry.

Our advice: DS is the family to choose when low-level draining matters. For continuous debris-rich pond filtration, use a screened filter pump instead.

Should I use the largest connection possible?

Usually yes. Generous, smooth pipework reduces friction and helps the pump deliver more water for the same electricity.

Can I reduce flow with a valve?

A valve can trim a water-pump output where the instructions allow, but a correctly sized pump or approved controller is normally more efficient than heavy throttling.

How often should I clean the pump?

Inspect it whenever flow falls and as part of routine pond maintenance. Keep the intake, rotor and impeller chamber clear without damaging seals or shafts.

Why is my real flow lower than the model name?

Model names and maximum-flow figures do not include the resistance of a real installation. A flow test at the return is the best check after installation.
