Build a feeding routine around the pond

Measure water temperature in the pond. Begin with small portions and watch what is eaten before adding more. Reduce feeding when appetite falls or water quality deteriorates. Increase the ration gradually as conditions improve, particularly after a quiet winter period or a change to the filter.

Check that smaller or quieter fish receive food as well as the most active feeders. For sinking food, observe the area below the surface. Count any treats within the daily ration and remove uneaten food.

Pack size and freshness

Choose a quantity that can be used while fresh. A larger pack is useful only if it suits the feeding rate and can be stored correctly. Litres measure volume and kilograms measure weight; compare declared food weights where possible. Keep food sealed, cool and dry, use a dry scoop and follow the pack’s best-before date.

Common questions

Are Everyday and Cold Weather foods pond sticks?

The manufacturer packaging identifies them as pellet foods. Everyday’s pictured label specifies 3 mm pellets. Pond Flakes provides a separate flake format, and Variety is a floating pellet mixture.

Which FishScience food is positioned for cooler water?

Cold Weather Pond Food contains insect meal and wheatgerm and is labelled for water below 10°C. Use the supplied pack’s lower feeding limit and watch appetite; this does not mean feeding at every temperature below 10°C.

Can I use the same nutrition table for every FishScience food?

No. The pictured Pond Flakes and Everyday labels have different analyses, and Variety and Cold Weather are separately named recipes. Match the declaration to the exact food and pack.

Does a 5 L pack contain 5 kg of food?

No. Litres measure volume. Use the net food weight on the selected pack when comparing cost by weight, and check the chosen option rather than judging quantity from a photograph of a larger pack.
