Creating a Calm and Enriching Wildlife Pond

Earlier this year, That Pond Guy was proud to complete a specialist pond build at the Lion Rescue Centre within the Big Cat Sanctuary. This bespoke wildlife pond was designed to provide a calm and enriching environment for Vanda, one of five lions rescued from Ukraine, while also delivering long term durability and ease of maintenance for the sanctuary team.

From the outset, the pond was carefully planned to suit a sensitive wildlife setting, balancing natural aesthetics with practical performance. Every element of the design was tailored to support animal wellbeing while blending seamlessly into the surrounding enclosure.

A Striking Waterfall as the Centrepiece

A powerful yet serene waterfall forms the visual centrepiece of the pond. As well as adding movement and the calming sound of flowing water, the waterfall helps improve circulation and oxygenation throughout the pond. This creates a healthier aquatic environment while enhancing the overall appearance of the enclosure for both animals and visitors.

The natural finish ensures the waterfall feels at home within the landscape, complementing the surrounding planting and stonework without distracting from the setting.

Hidden Filtration for Clean and Healthy Water

To maintain consistently high water quality, a hidden drum filtration system was installed as part of the pond build. This advanced self cleaning system automatically removes debris before it can break down, keeping the water crystal clear and healthy at all times.

By reducing the need for hands on maintenance, the filtration system significantly lowers the day to day workload for the keepers. This allows the sanctuary team to focus on animal care, confident that the pond will continue to perform reliably in the background.
