Charles Austen A and SW Water Pumps

Compact submersible pumps for water features, reservoirs and modest pond circulation

The A and SW series sits between a small aquarium pump and a full debris-handling pond-filter pump. Outputs on this page run from the SW2500 at 2,500 l/h to the A9000 at 8,200 l/h, with useful maximum-head figures for fountains, hydroponic reservoirs and elevated returns.

These pumps suit clean or reasonably screened water. If the job involves leaves, blanket weed or continuous solids transfer to a pond filter, compare a caged filter pump instead. A compact intake can only pass what reaches it without blocking.

The A9000 stands out for its 6 m maximum head, while the lower models cover smaller flows. That does not make A9000 the automatic choice: at 250 W it should be used where the extra pressure is genuinely needed.

Model Comparison

Model Maximum flow Maximum head Power
SW2500 2,500 l/h 3.2 m 100 W
A5000 4,800 l/h 3.0 m 94 W
SW4500 4,500 l/h 4.2 m 150 W
A7000 6,500 l/h 3.5 m 120 W
A9000 8,200 l/h 6.0 m 250 W

Maximum figures are comparison points measured under favourable conditions. Delivered flow falls as head and system resistance increase.

Where this range makes sense

Use these pumps for water features, clean-water circulation, tanks and reservoirs where a compact submersible body and useful lift are required. The SW models are relevant where a smaller flow must still climb a relatively demanding return.

For a waterfall, measure from pond surface to discharge and include the loss through hose and fittings. A 6 m maximum head does not mean an attractive waterfall at 6 m.

A practical choice between the models

SW2500 and A5000 suit modest flows; SW4500 sacrifices some headline flow for a stronger 4.2 m head. A7000 is the lower-energy higher-flow option, while A9000 provides the greatest pressure for demanding features.

Compare the performance curve at your operating head, not only the first column in the table.

Keep the intake clean and the pipe generous

Place the pump where it can be reached without draining the pond. Use a pre-screen where loose debris is likely, avoid undersized hose and isolate the electricity before lifting or clearing the unit.

Our advice: tell us whether the priority is litres per hour or lift. In this family the highest-flow and best-efficiency choice is not always the model with the strongest head.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which is the smallest pump in this category?

The SW2500 is listed at up to 2,500 l/h with a 3.2 m maximum head.

Which model has the strongest head?

A9000 has the highest published maximum head at 6.0 m.

Why might I choose SW4500 instead of A5000?

SW4500 has a slightly lower maximum flow but a higher published head, which may suit a more elevated feature.

Are these debris-handling filter pumps?

They are compact circulation pumps. Use suitable screening and compare a caged filter pump where solids handling is central.

Can they run a waterfall?

Yes, if the selected model delivers the required flow at the calculated lift and pipe resistance.

Can they be used in a reservoir?

Yes, subject to water quality, access, submersion and the exact product instructions.

Is A9000 the most economical model?

No. It has the highest output and head here but also the highest listed power input.

Can I use narrow flexible hose?

It may physically connect, but narrow hose can waste a large part of the available performance.

Does maximum flow tell me what will reach the filter or waterfall?

No. Maximum flow is measured with little or no head. Lift, pipe length, fittings, hose diameter and connected equipment all reduce delivered flow.

Is maximum head the height at which I get full flow?

No. Maximum head is the shut-off end of the performance curve, where useful flow approaches zero.

Should I use the largest connection possible?

Usually yes. Generous, smooth pipework reduces friction and helps the pump deliver more water for the same electricity.

Can I reduce flow with a valve?

A valve can trim a water-pump output where the instructions allow, but a correctly sized pump or approved controller is normally more efficient than heavy throttling.

How often should I clean the pump?

Inspect it whenever flow falls and as part of routine pond maintenance. Keep the intake, rotor and impeller chamber clear without damaging seals or shafts.

Can you help size a A or SW pump?

Yes. Send us the required flow, vertical lift, pipe bore and length, major fittings and the equipment the pump will feed.

Why is my real flow lower than the model name?

Model names and maximum-flow figures do not include the resistance of a real installation. A flow test at the return is the best check after installation.
