The Evolution Aqua Nexus 220+ filter is a next generation pond filtration system designed for koi ponds up to 18,000 litres. It combines mechanical solids separation and high efficiency biological filtration within a single integrated unit. As a result, it delivers reliable water clarity and stable biological performance for medium sized koi systems and suitable for both pump fed and gravity fed isntallations.

Unlike traditional multi chamber filters, the Evolution Aqua Nexus 220+ filter integrates vortex settlement, fine particle capture and moving bed biological treatment in a single compact footprint. Therefore, it simplifies installation while maintaining high filtration standards for serious koi keepers.

With overall dimensions of approximately 1260 mm x 1110 mm x 850 mm, the unit remains manageable within standard filter bays. Consequently, it suits both new builds and retrofit installations where space planning is important.

Mechanical Filtration with Eazy and K1 Micro

Water first enters the central vortex chamber, where heavier solids naturally settle out of suspension. This primary stage reduces the load on the mechanical filter and improves overall system efficiency.

The water then passes into the Eazy filter unit. This chamber contains 18 litres of K1 Micro media, specifically engineered to capture fine suspended particles. As a result, the system achieves improved water clarity while reducing debris transfer into the biological stage.

Enhanced Biological Filtration with K+ Moving Bed Media

After mechanical treatment, water flows into the outer moving bed chamber. Here, 50 litres of K+ Media provide a large protected surface area for nitrifying bacteria.

Because the media is continuously aerated and kept in motion, oxygen levels remain high. Therefore, ammonia and nitrite are efficiently converted into nitrate through aerobic biological processes. This constant movement also prevents clogging and ensures even bacterial colonisation across the media.

The Nexus 220+ can accommodate up to 150 litres of K+ Advanced Media if additional biological capacity is required. Therefore, the system can scale to suit growing koi collections or increased stocking densities.

However, increasing media volume requires stronger aeration. When running the supplied 50 litres, the Evolution Aqua Airtech 75 or the Charles Austen ET80 provide sufficient airflow to maintain proper agitation and biological efficiency.

If you intend to maximise the bio chamber with 150 litres of media, upgrading to a larger air pump is recommended. In this case, the Evolution Aqua Airtech 130 or the Charles Austen ET120 deliver improved air output, ensuring full media movement and preventing dead spots within the chamber.

Quite simply, when expanding the moving bed, bigger is better. Strong aeration maximises oxygen transfer, enhances bacterial performance and supports long term ammonia stability.

Recommended Pumps for the Nexus 220+

To achieve the recommended 6,000 litres per hour flow rate, selecting the correct circulation pump is essential. An ideal pairing for this filter is the Evolution Aqua Varipump 10,000. This variable speed pump allows precise flow adjustment while maintaining energy efficient operation. As a result, you can fine tune the system to match your pond volume and pipework configuration.

Alternatively, the Pontec PondoMax Eco Control 10000 pump provides a strong and cost effective solution. Its adjustable output and solids handling capability make it well suited to gravity fed and pump fed Nexus installations.

Both options deliver appropriate head height performance while allowing control over flow rates, which is particularly important for maintaining optimal dwell time within the filter.

Auto Ready for Automatic Cleaning

The Nexus 220+ is supplied auto ready. It includes pre installed fixings that allow seamless integration with the Nexus Automatic Cleaning System for both Gravity and Pump Fed installations.

This means the filter can be upgraded to automated cleaning without replacing the main unit. As a result, maintenance can be significantly reduced while maintaining optimal mechanical performance.

Nexus 220+ TI Version with Integrated UV

Evolution Aqua now offers the Nexus 220+ TI version, which incorporates a fully integrated ultraviolet clarifier within the main filter body.

The TI model includes 72 watts of built in UV power along with a titanium UV chamber. This design improves durability and corrosion resistance while delivering strong water clarification performance. As a result, green water control becomes more efficient without requiring a separate external UV unit.

By integrating the UV internally, the TI version reduces external pipework and simplifies installation. In addition, it creates a cleaner overall filter layout within the filter bay.

The standard Nexus 220+ remains an excellent mechanical and biological filtration solution. However, if you are seeking enhanced clarity control and a more streamlined installation, the TI version provides an upgraded all in one option.
