Common Bistort | Persicaria bistorta

Native pond marginal plant with soft pink flower spikes and lush green foliage

Common Bistort (Persicaria bistorta), also known as Adderwort or Meadow Bistort, is a beautiful UK native perennial that is perfectly suited to pond margins, bog gardens, and damp planting areas. Known for its soft, upright flower spikes and dense foliage, this plant offers both visual appeal and strong ecological benefits for wildlife friendly ponds.

From June through to September, Common Bistort produces dense cylindrical spikes of pale pink flowers that rise above the foliage. These blooms are highly attractive to bees, butterflies, and other pollinators, making it a fantastic addition if you are looking to improve biodiversity around your pond. The flowers create a soft, natural look that blends beautifully into both formal and wildlife style planting schemes.

The foliage is equally impressive, forming dense clumps of mid green leaves with prominent veins. These leaves provide excellent ground cover, helping to stabilise soil around pond edges and reduce erosion. As the plant establishes, it creates a natural, lush border that softens hard pond edges and blends planting into the surrounding landscape.

Common Bistort thrives in moist to wet soils and performs well in both full sun and partial shade. It is particularly useful for planting on marginal shelves or in boggy ground where consistent moisture is available. Once established, it is a low maintenance and highly reliable plant that returns year after year.

Its rhizomatous growth habit allows it to slowly spread and form fuller clumps over time, making it ideal for filling out planting areas without becoming overly invasive. This makes it a great choice for both smaller garden ponds and larger naturalistic water features.

As a fully hardy UK native species, Common Bistort is well adapted to local conditions and can withstand harsh winters with ease. Whether you are creating a wildlife pond, softening pond edges, or adding seasonal colour, this plant is a dependable and attractive choice.
