Ceramic Flat Air Discs

Fine bubble ceramic air discs for ponds, koi ponds and quarantine systems

Ceramic Flat Air Discs are flat porous air diffusers designed to spread air over a wider surface area than a small air stone. They are useful where you want a strong, even column of fine bubbles in a pond, koi pond, holding tank, quarantine system or filter chamber. When matched to a suitable air pump, a flat air disc helps increase dissolved oxygen, improve water movement and support biological filtration.

These discs are made from grey blue porous ceramic material that is hardened at high temperature. The supplier information describes the ceramic as being hardened with an aluminium alloy at around 1300°C, giving a corrosion resistant and shock resistant diffuser body. The porous ceramic structure produces fine bubbles rather than large coarse bubbles, which improves air to water contact and gives a cleaner, more controlled aeration pattern.

The key point with any ceramic diffuser is that it must be matched to the right air pump. Ceramic discs can create more back pressure than some rubber membrane diffusers, so an undersized air pump may produce weak or uneven bubbling. A larger pump can be split through a manifold, allowing the air output to be adjusted across more than one diffuser and reducing unnecessary strain on the pump.

Why choose a flat air disc?

A flat disc is a good choice when you want a compact diffuser with a broad bubble face. It can be placed in a pond, fish tank, quarantine vat or filter chamber and connected to a pond air pump using suitable airline. Compared with a small round air stone, the larger disc face can move more air and produce a wider bubble plume.

  • Fine bubble ceramic diffuser for pond and filter aeration
  • Useful for koi ponds, quarantine systems, holding tanks and biological filters
  • Large flat surface gives a wider bubble pattern than a small air stone
  • Porous ceramic body helps create fine bubbles for improved oxygen transfer
  • Available in 132mm and 200mm diameter options
  • Best used with a correctly sized air pump and suitable airline
  • Can be controlled through a manifold when several diffusers are installed

Available sizes

Option Size Best use
132mm diameter air disc 132mm diameter Smaller ponds, tanks, quarantine systems and compact filter chambers
200mm diameter air disc 200mm diameter Larger ponds, koi systems, filter chambers and higher airflow installations
200mm diameter budget air disc 200mm diameter A lower cost 200mm option where a wider ceramic bubble face is required

Technical specifications

  • Product type: Fine bubble ceramic flat air disc
  • Material: Porous ceramic, grey blue finish
  • Construction note: Hardened at high temperature with aluminium alloy according to supplier information
  • Available sizes: 132mm diameter and 200mm diameter
  • Bubble type: Fine bubble aeration
  • Connection guidance: Match airline and fittings to the chosen disc and air pump outlet
  • Best use: Pond aeration, koi pond oxygenation, quarantine tanks, holding vats and filter chambers
  • Installation: Place below water level and connect to a pond air pump using suitable airline
  • Important: Avoid undersized airline and excessive back pressure, especially with larger air pumps

Choosing airline and manifolds

For most smaller pond and tank installations, a standard sinking airline may be enough. For larger diffusers, longer runs or higher airflow installations, use a larger bore airline and a manifold so the air can be balanced properly. If you are running several diffusers from one pump, use a manifold rather than forcing all the air through one outlet.

Maintenance advice

Ceramic diffusers should be checked periodically for blocked pores, algae film or limescale deposits. If bubbling becomes uneven, clean the disc gently and check that the airline is not kinked or restricted. Do not run a diaphragm air pump against blocked diffusers for long periods, as this can increase back pressure and shorten the life of wearable pump parts.

Suitable airline and manifolds

Flat ceramic air discs are commonly used with pond air pumps, manifolds and suitable airline. For installations using an 8mm feed into smaller 4mm branch lines, see the Air Manifold with 8mm Inlet and 4mm Outlets. For larger pipework, use the heavy duty manifold and weighted airline options.
