4mm/8mm Standard Sinking Airline is a weighted air hose designed to remain beneath the water instead of floating across the pond surface. It is suitable for connecting pond air pumps to air stones, air diffusers, aerated filters and other pond oxygenation equipment.

The weighted PVC construction allows the airline to sink naturally and follow the contours of the pond floor. This removes the need to attach separate airline weights and helps create a neater, less visible installation. The black finish also blends discreetly against pond liners, pond bases and dark aquarium backgrounds.

This sinking airline is supplied by Air Aqua on a practical roll that can be handled and stored easily. Distance markings are printed along the hose, allowing the required length to be measured and cut directly from the roll. This is particularly useful for pond installations where several different airline lengths are required.

The airline is available with either a 4mm or 8mm internal diameter. The 4mm version has an outside diameter of approximately 8mm and is supplied on a 200m roll. It is suitable for smaller air pumps, individual air stones, aquariums, quarantine systems and compact pond aeration installations.

The larger 8mm version has an outside diameter of approximately 12mm and is supplied on a 100m roll. It is designed for pond air pumps, larger air stones, diffuser systems and installations requiring greater airflow. Air Aqua recommends an airflow of approximately 15 litres per minute through the 8mm airline, with a stated operating range between 10 and 25 litres per minute.

Good pond aeration helps support fish, beneficial filtration bacteria and overall water quality. Oxygen becomes particularly important during warm weather because warmer water naturally holds less dissolved oxygen. Rising bubbles also encourage water circulation by drawing deeper pond water towards the surface.

Where multiple cut lengths are ordered, they will be supplied as separate lengths rather than as 1 continuous piece.

For example, ordering 2 × 30m lengths will provide 2 separate 30m lengths rather than 1 continuous 60m length.

Customers requiring a complete continuous roll should select the relevant 100m or 200m roll option.

Practical advice

Air accessories should be chosen around airflow and back pressure, not just thread size or hose diameter. If the airline is too small, the manifold is restrictive or the diffuser is blocked, the pump has to work harder and the amount of air reaching the pond can drop noticeably. A tidy, low restriction air system is quieter, more efficient and easier to service.

• Use a manifold when splitting one air pump across multiple air stones or diffusers.
• Fit a non-return valve where there is any risk of water tracking back toward the pump.
• Use larger airline on higher output pumps where possible to reduce restriction.
• Clean diffusers if airflow drops or bubbles become uneven.
• Service diaphragm pumps before airflow falls away completely.
• Keep airline routes as short and smooth as practical.
• Match large diffuser stations with a pump that can maintain output at the installed depth.

When upgrading an older aeration system, it is worth checking the pump output, airline size and diffuser condition together, as a weak point in any one of those areas can reduce the amount of useful air reaching the pond.
