Creeping Jenny | Lysimachia nummularia
Low growing trailing pond plant with bright yellow flowers and cascading foliage
Creeping Jenny (Lysimachia nummularia) is a highly versatile and visually striking UK native marginal plant, perfect for softening pond edges, filling gaps in planting schemes, and adding vibrant colour to both large ponds and smaller container water features. Known for its trailing stems and rounded leaves, this plant creates a natural, flowing look as it gently cascades over rocks, pond liners, and basket edges.
During the summer months, typically from June to August, Creeping Jenny produces masses of cheerful golden yellow flowers that sit just above the foliage. These bright blooms contrast beautifully against its fresh green leaves and help attract bees and other pollinators, making it a valuable addition to any wildlife friendly pond.
One of the standout features of Creeping Jenny is its ability to spread and form dense ground cover. This helps to suppress weeds, stabilise soil around pond edges, and provide essential shelter for amphibians such as frogs and newts. Its trailing habit also makes it ideal for softening harsh lines in formal ponds or creating a more natural, relaxed look in wildlife ponds.
This plant thrives in consistently moist to wet conditions and can be planted in shallow water or damp soil around the pond edge. It performs well in both full sun and partial shade, although flowering is often more prolific in sunnier positions. Creeping Jenny is also well suited to container ponds, where it can spill beautifully over the sides, adding depth and visual interest to smaller water features.
Fully hardy in the UK, this is a reliable, low maintenance plant that returns year after year. While it is not as aggressive as some spreading pond plants, it does benefit from occasional trimming to keep it neat and prevent it from encroaching on neighbouring plants.
Whether you are looking to enhance a wildlife pond, soften a formal water feature, or add greenery to a container pond, Creeping Jenny is an excellent choice that combines practicality with ornamental appeal.
