Shuttlecock Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris)
Tall architectural fern with graceful vase shaped fronds, perfect for shaded pond edges, damp borders and wildlife friendly gardens.
Shuttlecock Fern (Matteuccia struthiopteris) is a striking ornamental fern that brings height, elegance and dramatic structure to shaded pondside planting. Named after the distinctive vase shaped arrangement of its fronds, this beautiful fern creates a bold architectural presence while still maintaining the soft, natural appearance that works so well in wildlife friendly gardens.
In spring, tightly curled fronds emerge from the centre of the plant and gradually unfurl into tall, feathery foliage. As the plant matures, the bright green fronds form a graceful fountain shape, rising upright before gently arching outwards. This distinctive shape resembles an old fashioned shuttlecock, which is how the plant earned its common name.
Shuttlecock Fern can grow between 90 cm and 150 cm tall, making it one of the larger ornamental ferns available for pondside planting. Mature plants may spread up to around 100 cm, forming impressive clumps that add height and depth to planting schemes. The bold fronds contrast beautifully with lower growing moisture loving plants and help create layered planting around pond edges.
This fern thrives in moist, humus rich soil and is particularly well suited to damp garden conditions near ponds, streams and bog gardens. The plant performs best in partial shade or full shade where the soil remains consistently moist but well drained. Because of its natural preference for woodland environments, it is perfect for creating naturalistic planting schemes around wildlife ponds.
The dense foliage also provides valuable habitat for wildlife. Frogs, toads and beneficial insects often use the shelter of the fronds for protection and resting areas. When planted near water features, the fern contributes to the overall biodiversity of the garden and helps create a more balanced ecosystem.
Matteuccia struthiopteris is hardy in most parts of the UK and tolerates winter temperatures down to around minus 15°C. It is a deciduous fern, meaning the foliage dies back in autumn before returning with fresh growth in spring. This natural cycle helps maintain healthy growth and encourages strong new fronds each year.
With its impressive height, elegant form and wildlife benefits, Shuttlecock Fern is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to create dramatic yet natural planting around ponds and shaded garden areas.
