Bog Pimpernel

Delicate native ground cover plant for shallow pond edges and bog gardens

Bog Pimpernel, also known as Anagallis tenella, is a beautifully subtle native aquatic plant that brings a soft, natural feel to pond edges, shallow water zones, and bog gardens. With its low growing, mat forming habit and charming pale pink flowers, it is ideal for creating a naturalistic pond margin that blends seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.

Flowering from late spring through to early autumn, typically between June and September, Bog Pimpernel produces small, star like pink flowers that sit just above its carpet of bright green foliage. These delicate blooms are particularly attractive to bees and pollinators, helping to support a healthy pond ecosystem.

Its creeping growth habit makes it perfect for covering exposed soil around pond edges or creating a soft transition between water and land. The dense mat of foliage not only looks attractive but also plays an important role in stabilising soil and preventing erosion in shallow or damp areas. It also provides valuable shelter for amphibians and small pond wildlife.

Bog Pimpernel thrives in very shallow water or damp soil conditions, making it especially suited to pond beach areas where water levels may fluctuate slightly. It prefers full sun to partial shade and performs best in consistently moist environments. Due to its low height, it works particularly well when planted alongside taller marginal plants to create depth and layering within your planting scheme.

This is an excellent choice for wildlife ponds, natural planting projects, and anyone looking to soften the edges of a pond with something more delicate and refined. As a UK native species, it is well adapted to local conditions and will reliably return year after year.

Please note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested and should be handled with care around pets and children.
