Choosing the Correct Glass Thickness
Selecting the correct glass thickness is essential for long term safety, durability and clear viewing. As a general guide:
- 21.5mm glass is suitable for windows up to 400mm high and 1600mm wide
- 25.5mm glass is suitable for windows up to 600mm high and 2000mm wide
- 33mm glass is suitable for windows up to 1000mm high and around 2000mm wide
- 39mm glass is suitable for windows up to 1000mm high and up to 3000mm wide
- 44.5mm glass is suitable for windows up to 1200mm high and up to 3500mm wide
Built for Strength, Clarity and Longevity
Every panel is fully laminated, toughened and heat soaked to maximise safety and long term reliability.
Laminated construction ensures the glass remains bonded even in the unlikely event of damage, while heat soaking helps reduce the risk of spontaneous breakage over time. Polished edges and neatly finished corners provide a clean, professional finish that enhances the overall look of your pond.
These panels are commonly used in koi ponds, natural swimming ponds and architectural water features where both strength and visual clarity are essential.
Safe and Professional Installation
For best results, we recommend allowing a 10mm gap on each side of the panel to accommodate a silicone bead and achieve a clean, watertight seal.
A rebate system can be used to create a secure, flush finish. Professional installation is strongly recommended, particularly for larger or deeper viewing windows, to ensure correct support, sealing and long term safety.
How Much Silicone Is Needed for a Pond Glass Viewing Window?
Allowing enough silicone is essential to achieve a strong, continuous and watertight seal.
As a general guide, where a 50mm rebate is used, silicone usage is approximately one tube per 200mm of glass edge.
For example:
- A window measuring 1600mm x 600mm has a total edge length of 2800mm
- This would typically require up to 14 tubes of silicone
Actual usage can vary depending on rebate depth, surface flatness and installation method, so we always recommend allowing extra to avoid running short.
Recommended Sealants for Pond Glass Viewing Window Installation
Choosing the right sealant is just as important as selecting the correct glass thickness. The products below are all suitable for pond environments and commonly used when installing pond glass viewing windows, depending on whether the application is above or below the waterline.
For high strength bonding and sealing around pond windows, we recommend the following:
Aquaforte Superstrong Fix & Seal
A powerful MS polymer adhesive and sealant offering excellent bonding strength and a fully waterproof seal. Ideal for sealing pond windows, frames and fittings.
Gold Label Underwater Pond Sealer
Perfect for applications where sealing is required below the waterline. Fish safe, non toxic and suitable for underwater use without draining the pond.
Silver Label Aquarium Silicone
A fish safe silicone sealant suitable for glass to glass bonding and aquarium style installations. Best used where a traditional silicone is required.
PondPal Underwater Pond Sealer
Designed specifically for underwater pond repairs and sealing. Stronger than silicone and ideal for use in live ponds without disturbing fish.
Delivery and Offloading Requirements
All pond glass viewing windows are made to order and are delivered curbside only, supplied without packaging. This helps prevent pressure points and avoids moisture becoming trapped against the glass during transit.
Delivery typically takes 2 to 3 weeks, although this can vary during busy periods. Deliveries are usually made between 07:30 and 17:30 and will require a signature. The driver will normally make contact approximately 1 hour before arrival.
While the vast majority of deliveries run smoothly, occasional delays can occur and in some cases delivery may take place the following day. For this reason, we recommend allowing flexibility around your delivery date.
Due to the weight of the panels, suitable help must be available on the day of delivery. As a guide, allow a minimum of two people per 85 kilograms of glass. Drivers are not always able to assist with offloading.
We strongly recommend not booking installation work until the glass has been safely delivered.
If delivery cannot be completed due to access issues or insufficient help, a redelivery charge may apply.
Important Considerations Before Ordering
- All panels are made to order and cannot be returned once manufactured
- Please ensure all measurements are accurate before ordering
- Confirm access for delivery and offloading
- Ensure the correct glass thickness is selected
- Do not book installation until delivery has been completed
- We do have a minimum order charge for delivered glass orders of £200. This is not something we add ourselves; it’s a minimum charge passed on directly from our glass processors and delivery network.
